Understanding Advanced Wound Care Treatments

Our Approach to Healing Chronic Wounds

The advanced wound care treatments provided at our Wound Care Centers® are proven effective by years of research and analysis. Healogics mission to advance wound healing includes ongoing research to improve healing rates for people with non-healing wounds. Our proprietary data, along with respected medical literature, indicate that chronic wounds require specialized care. The longer a non-healing wound goes untreated, the greater your risk of infection, amputation, or other serious health complications.

When to Seek Advanced Wound Care

If you have a wound that hasn’t started to heal within two weeks or isn’t completely healed in six weeks, you may have a chronic, non-healing wound. It’s important to seek specialized care to avoid complications. Common conditions that can benefit from advanced wound care include:

  • Diabetic foot ulcers
  • Venous stasis ulcers
  • Arterial ulcers
  • Pressure ulcers (bedsores)
  • Non-healing surgical wounds
  • Radiation-related tissue damage

What to Expect During Your Visit

During your first visit to a Healogics-managed Wound Care Center®, our team of specialists will conduct a thorough evaluation of your wound and overall health. This may include diagnostic testing to determine the underlying cause of your non-healing wound. Based on this assessment, we will develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs. We will also provide you with detailed instructions on how to care for your wound at home to promote healing between your appointments.

Types of Advanced Wound Care Treatments

At Healogics-managed Wound Care Centers®, we offer a comprehensive range of advanced treatments tailored to your specific wound type and healing needs. Your individual plan of care may include one or more of the following evidence-based therapies:

Debridement: Removing Barriers to Healing

Debridement is the medical removal of dead, damaged, or infected tissue to improve the healing potential of the remaining healthy tissue. It is a critical step in the healing process for chronic wounds, as it creates a healthier wound environment and reduces the risk of infection. Healogics research shows that regular debridement significantly improves healing outcomes, especially for complex wounds like arterial, pressure, and diabetic ulcers.

Pressure Relief and Offloading

For wounds on the lower legs or feet, pressure relief, also known as offloading, is essential. This involves using specialized devices like boots, crutches, or wheelchairs to prevent weight-bearing on the affected limb. Offloading protects the wound from further injury and allows it to heal more effectively.

Cellular and Tissue-Based Products (CTPs)

Cellular and tissue-based products (CTPs), also known as skin substitutes or tissue-growing therapies, deliver living cells or tissue directly to the wound. These advanced therapies help stimulate the body’s natural healing processes, promoting new cell growth and tissue regeneration.

Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT)

Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) uses a vacuum device to create a controlled negative pressure environment over the wound. This therapy helps draw fluid away from the wound, reduce swelling, and stimulate blood flow, which can accelerate healing.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBO)

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) involves breathing 100% oxygen in a pressurized chamber. This allows your blood to carry significantly more oxygen to the wound site, which stimulates the growth of new blood vessels and promotes tissue repair. Our research shows that HBOT can be highly effective for treating a variety of conditions, including diabetic foot ulcers, radiation-related tissue damage, and chronic bone infections.
